Bobby: The Mindless Menace Of Violence

I just finished watching the movie Bobby. I haven't seen it in full until now, and I actually had it come in a few days ago but finally found time to watch it tonight; it just so happens to be Veterans Day. The movie really put things into perspective for me.

It's such a sad and tragic loss to know of someone who cared so much about others and gave so much hope, to have it all be gone in a split second because of selfish, violent and ignorant people. I can't even imagine what the country would have looked like, if it didn't turn out the way it did. This one occasion doesn't even begin the list of terrible events in the past that the country, let alone, the world has had to suffer.

There's no need to even list any events, because if there is someone out there today who can't recall one single event, then there's a problem in and of itself. It's sad. It's really really sad. I can't say that I haven't done the same (in terms of not speaking out as loudly as I could) but I'm not proud of it either. I watch movies and read stories like this that show only a glimpse of what the world used to look like and how people back then are as affected by the world and the society as much as we are now. The only difference, it seems, is that people now don't really want to pay attention as much as the ones in the history books and films and biographies. These movies and books and lives that we read about should be a clear indication of what the world shouldn't look like today because of the obvious losses and tragedies that come from what's already happened.

It's ironic that I watched this tonight because earlier at work today I was having a conversation with my coworker who made a comment about the world today, specifically referring to art. What he said was that nowadays artists are retreating more and more into a safe zone of brushing politics under the rug... not all artists, but for those who do have an opinion on the world and current/ past events, that things are just brushed off like nothing. Also, that people generations before us literally were put to prison or practically beaten to death to get their message across because it specifically expressed their opposition to the terrible things that were going on in the world at the time. Whenever there's a crowd of supporters, there will almost always be a crowd of opposers.

I wish people would take a second to consider what's really going on around them rather than just pretending that everything is okay and think that things will just magically turn out well. One day it won't. Who knows! I think it's about time that history stopped repeating itself for once.

[This was 4 paragraphs longer than I intended, but it definitely got me thinking... which is always better than not]
